Semiotics (Re-write)

Semiotics (also known as semiology and semiotics studies) is the study of understanding signs such as the 'Fire Exit' sign or the traffic light signs. We all know how to react to these signs because it has been established over the long period of time by a cultural convention and we have been taught from a very young age that the white man running towards the exit from fire on a green background means that this is the fire exit. Same goes for the traffic lights.

We all know what does the red, orange and green light stand for. If the person is for example color blind, there are pictures shown on the lights such as the green walking man and the red standing man. By looking at these signs we know that we have to wait when the red man shows and cross the road when the green man shows.

Not all signs are visual, some of them are sonic sounds such as the fire alarm or the police/ambulance siren. we all know what certain sound means because we have been taught from a very young age.

There are also signs which look the same but have a different meaning. for example the thumb up. if you are standing on the road with the thumb up it means you are waiting for someone to pick you up and give you a ride to desired place, The thumb up for diver means to go up the surface, and the thumb up during the Roman empire times was a signal if if the gladiator is okay or a thumb down which meant he was deador seriously wounded.
